During a Parliamentary Q&A session, a British Labour Party politician and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Slough, Fiona Margaret Mactaggart, raised the question about brutal torcher and murder of Master Abdul Dudoos by Punjab Police in Rabwah Pakistan.

MP Mactaggart asked:
"To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he has raised with his Pakistani counterpart the death of Abdul Qudoos Ahmad; what steps he is taking to promote human rights around the world; and if he will make a statement."

Alistair Burt responded:
"I am aware of the allegations that Abdul Qudoos, a member of the Ahmadi community in Pakistan, was tortured to death while in police custody.
"Her Majesty's Government has made clear its concern about the treatment of minority religious groups such as the Ahmadiyya community and the wider human rights situation in Pakistan.
"While we have not raised this individual case we regularly discuss issues of religious freedom with the Government of Pakistan and the importance of perpetrators of human rights abuses being brought to justice. These issues were covered during the visit of the Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar in February. They also form part of the regular human rights dialogue the EU have with the Government of Pakistan."

Background:

Master Abdul Qudoos, a schoolteacher and the president of the Nusratabad chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Rabwah, was taken into custody on February 10 without warrants and any legal formality.

Police brutally tortured Master Qudoos for 46 days in efforts to have him confess to crimes he did not commit and to force him to implicate the Ahmadiyya leadership in other crimes.

While in custody, apart from the routine ‘hang him upside down and beat him black and blue till he confesses’, the schoolteacher was also pinned to the floor by policemen holding his legs and arms and a weighted wooden down roller run over him causing untold internal injuries.

He was released without charge some 46 days later and his family were told by the police to take him home as he was unwell.

Master Qudoos died of internal injuries despite doctor's best efforts to save his life.
