The highest spiritual leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslims, the Khalifatul Masih V, is set to speak at the 36th annual Ahmadiyya Convention in Mississauga this weekend.
The three-day event, which normally draws about 25,000 people from Canada and the U.S., takes place at the International Centre beginning Friday at 1 p.m.
The Khalifatul Masih V will give the closing speech at the convention on Sunday just before noon.
"The first two days of the convention are mainly internal things," said Rizwan Rabbani, national executive director, department of faith outreach and communications, for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association Canada. "Sunday is when the dignitaries come, and that's when His Holiness will give his address."
Rabbani said Ahmadiyyas refer to Mississauga as "the blessed city" because it hosts the Canadian convention every year.
The convention itself is an Ahmadiyya tradition that dates back to 1891 in India. Ahmadiyya conventions are now held in more than 200 countries around the world. There's no accurate head count of Ahmadiyyas, but estimates worldwide range from 10 to 80 million. In Canada there are 65 chapters; eight in Mississauga.
"It will be a different kind of experience this year," said Rabbani. "When His Holiness arrived by plane yesterday at (Pearson International Airport), thousands of people stood on the sides of the road just to honour and welcome him. This will be a great time."
