Higgs trivia: The ... Particle and the prophets of CERN


 He [Dr Abdus Salam] once had to cancel a lecture because extremist nutters threatened to break his legs, and even after death the persecution did not stop, as a judge ordered that his grave be defaced.

Higgs trivia. One of the most depressing things I have read in a long time concerns Adbus Salam, a Pakistani physicist and genius and the only person from that country to win a Nobel Prize. Salam was one of the pioneers whose work on the Standard Model paved the way for the discovery of the Higgs.

The fact that Salam is not as well known as Peter Higgs in this country is unsurprising. What is astonishing and depressing in equal measure is that he is rapidly becoming forgotten in his homeland as well (he died 12 years ago). The reason is simple: Salam was born a member of the Ahmadi sect. This is an offshoot of Islam, moderate in many respects which is rejected by mainstream Muslims, particularly the hardline Sunnis of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan who believe the Ahmadis to be infidels or heretics.

As a result, Salam’s name has been removed from Pakistani school textbooks despite his being one of the country’s greatest ever scientists (and an undoubted patriot). He once had to cancel a lecture because extremist nutters threatened to break his legs, and even after death the persecution did not stop, as a judge ordered that his grave be defaced.
