India: Islamist hardliners attack Ahmadiyya Muslim convention in Tamil Nadu


This comes at the heel of a similar incident about 2 months ago when a Zonal convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community elders, “Majlis Ansaarullah,” of Tamil Nadu was disrupted in the same town.

A public meeting of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in the town of Tirpur of Tamil Nadu, a Southern State in India, was scheduled to start at 4PM, Saturday, July 14, when the event was disrupted by local Islimist hardliners.

According to the early reports, the location of the meeting - outside the Town Hall in Tirpur - was swarmed by nearly 100 Islamist who forced their way in to the convention area and tore off banners and posters of the program.

Over 300 members of the community were gathered at the location after traveling from various parts of the state of Tamil Nadu and Kerala to attend the Meeting.

Later, the angry mob swelled to over 1000 strong and demanded an immedeate shutdown of the Ahmadiyya convention underway and cancelation of all future Ahmadiyya activities in the area.

At the incitement of their leaders mob started pelting the convention attendees with stones and several members of the community received injuries.

Over 100 policemen including members of the Rapid Action Force (RAP) responded with baton-charge to clear trouble makers and police guarded the convention area.

The convention was condensed to a shorter program of about 30 minutes.

At the end of the program police convoy escorted all the members out to safety to outskirts of the town and provided security and safe location for the dignitaries.

The disturbance at the Ahmadiyya Muslim event received wide coverage from the local media.

In countries like Pakistan where mindless cluster of people live and dangerously selfish politicians rule them it is possible to let masses destroy their own becons of light but I am very surprised to see such incidents happening in politically awake country like India. History tells us that many majorities has changed to minorities so it a lesson for majorities of today to set good example and rules so that tomorrow when they become minority they shuold have safe heaven.
