Last weekend marked the end of the holy month of Ramadhan for Muslims worldwide. This is a month where able-bodied are enjoined to fast from dawn to sunset. Children, sick and the elderly are not required to fast. However, the ultimate spirit of Ramadhan goes beyond abstaining from eating and drinking. The core purpose is to instill humility, compassion and caring for those in need. Caring for the elderly and sick helps fulfill this core commitment.

Keeping in view this obligation to serve, Lajna Imaillah, women’s auxiliary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s Miami chapter, continued their tradition of sponsoring and serving meals for seniors at the Hepburn Center –the community center of the city of Hallandale Beach.

Members of Lajna Imaillah regularly volunteer and donate to the Center throughout the year. On the first Tuesday of every month, they help pack food that is donated to the Center by USDA, to be distributed to the local citizens. They conduct a monthly canned food drive for the Center at their local mosque. During holiday seasons, they arrange gifts for the children who attend the subsidized after-school program at the Center. Earlier this month, they had donated several items from the teachers’ wish list.

Victor De Souza is Program Coordinator Senior Services at the Hepburn Center. He demonstrates a true passion for his job. His kindness and care for the seniors is outstanding and reflects in his hard work and zeal. He constantly strives to engage the seniors, plans activities to motivate them and keep them healthy and involved. He encourages seniors to accomplish things that he believes that they are truly capable of doing. However, there are certain challenges along the way, which require providing motivation to the seniors; empowering them to realize their true potential is not always easy.

About the involvement of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community at the Hepburn Center, he believes that it is all about partnerships. He thinks that the Center is able to meet its goals due to the tremendous help and support from organizations like the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. When its members come to pack food on the first Tuesday of every month, it helps save time for the employees; their core job responsibilities are not compromised. The monthly food drives help in supporting the families in need.

Lajna Imiallah had sponsored the meal through Broward Meals on Wheels. Ruth Watts oversees Broward Meals on Wheels and she had these words for the Muslim women who sponsored and served the meal “They are the most kind, loving women who love to serve, love to give with kindness of the heart”.

Earlier in the month of Ramadhan, Lajna Imaillah had sponsored a meal for the 200+ homeless residents of Broward Outreach Center in Hollywood. They also donated items from the back-to-school wish list for the 14 children who reside at the Center. They bought new clothes for these children so that they could have at least one new piece of clothing when schools reopen next week.

Lajna Imiallah translates into “Maidservants of God”. Its members continue to stay true to their name; fulfilling their commitment to God by demonstrating their true love for humanity and serving with love, kindness and compassion.
