Personally, I can’t remember when putting up a wall ever lead to peace. Moreover, my religion, Islam, demands that nations never close any avenues of communication lest there be any hope for a treaty to occur.

This past Friday, Canada closed its embassy in Tehran. While the major powers of the world such as U.S. and Europe had previously placed sanctions on Iran, Canada made a bold and symbolic move to close the doors of communication.
As a Canadian who feels truly blessed to live in a country that promotes freedom and justice all across the world, and as an Ahmadi Muslim who believes that justice is the only avenue towards peace, I was deeply hurt to hear the news of Canada’s uncharacteristic decision.
This past year, the Head of the Worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, his Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, wrote letters to the leaders of the world, among them President Barack Obama, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper urging them to establish peace.
He further elaborated that the world, it seems, is on the brink of the Third World War. With tensions risings, His Holiness urged Canada to use its power to urge the other countries in the world away from global catastrophe.
By closing the embassy in Iran, Canada shut the doors of communications. In his interview with the CBC on Sunday, the prime minister of Israel even applauded Canada for setting an example to the rest of the world.
He said, “Canada just put a very big brick in that wall that is necessary for the peace of the world.”
Personally, I can’t remember when putting up a wall ever lead to peace. Moreover, my religion, Islam, demands that nations never close any avenues of communication lest there be any hope for a treaty to occur.
Canada definitely set an example, but is it one to applaud? I wonder if Stephen Harper listened to the advice of Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, for in my eyes, this bold step is not leading the world away from global catastrophe.
