Eye on blasphemy: No need to be vile

The producer of the vicious video equates Islam with “cancer.” Even the proponents of free speech are visibly outraged and calling for action to curb such hate speech that is cloaked under the guise of freedom of speech.

Ambassador Chris Stevens lost his life in an attack apparently triggered by a vile and hateful video that ridiculed Mohammed. There can be no justification for the attack on the American Consulate in Benghazi. The mob sought to avenge the hateful depiction of Mohammed. They acted ignorantly, and their own hateful actions contravened the essence of the teachings of the prophet whose honor they were supposedly defending.

Similar outrage has erupted in the past in the face of similar incitements fueled by radicals on the other end of the spectrum.

The producer of the vicious video equates Islam with “cancer.” Even the proponents of free speech are visibly outraged and calling for action to curb such hate speech that is cloaked under the guise of freedom of speech. To dishonor a prophet revered by 1.7 billion people is carrying hate speech to new heights. Disagreements and criticism need not be vile, nasty and hateful.
