Boston has declared a public health emergency after the state health department reported 18 flu deaths so far this season across Massachusetts.

"We're seeing a significant increase in sickness and severity," Nick Martin of the Boston Public Health Commission was quoted as saying on Wednesday by the Boston Herald.

At least four of the victims were from Boston. The number of confirmed flu cases in the city since the season began in October had reached 700, compared with 70 cases at the same time in 2012.

At least 44 states are reporting widespread flu outbreaks, CBS News reported.

A sampling of state reports showed dozens of deaths across the country, but there was no accurate national count.

The US Center for Disease Control (CDC) report for December 23-29 said the mortality rate was "slightly below the epidemic threshold".

The CDC said the dead included 18 children.

Barbara Ferrer, director of Boston's health commission, said the number of cases in the city had doubled in two weeks, pointing to a flu explosion in the coming weeks.

"We really need to get ahead of it," she was quoted as saying by the CBS television network.

Boston clinics are to give free flu vaccinations.
