Bangladesh: Learn from Pakistan, before it's too late

The Jamaat-e-Islami teachings and Maududi doctrines should be brought forth to make the international community understand that this defeated and rejected force is trying to get back their lost grounds by exploiting religious sentiments of the masses.

Bangladesh was not achieved in the name of religion, rather in the name of political equity, rights and freedom. Thus the society could not be divided politically into religious segments. Religio-political exploitation was closed legally. This particular aspect was clearly enshrined in the first constitution. But after the killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and other key leaders of the liberation movement, the nation observed a gradual drifting away at the state level. The defeated elements and forces started penetrating the society apparently under the innocent garb of religious services and education. One of the key players was Jama'at e Islami which, with a constant support and backing from abroad successfully infiltrated into the society, came into the mainstream politics and has ultimately turned into a worrying factor. They were backed by few past regimes who turned towards them to legitimize their illegal authority. Members of Jamat e Islami were directly involved in mass killings and murders under the banners of Al-Badr and Al-Shams sprinter groups who aided the Pakistani occupation forces. They collaborated with the army and caused a wide-spread bloodshed in 1971.

After 41 years of independence, the present government, with people's mandate started the process of trying the main war criminals. At this stage, it is only natural and expected that a well-organised and cunning force like Jamaat e Islami will surely try to manuever things towards their interests. For this, an all out intelligent an intellectual effort should be launched. The Jamaat-e-Islami teachings and Maududi doctrines should be brought forth to make the international community understand that this defeated and rejected force is trying to get back their lost grounds by exploiting religious sentiments of the masses. If this force is given an opportunity to gain an upper hand over here, they will turn into a disturbing factor for the whole region. By studying the Muadudian philosophy, it is not difficult at all to appreciate the fact that, if this specific doctrine has created the Frankenstein called Taliban in Afghanistan, Waziristan and NWFP, it can repeat the same in other regions as well. We are confident that the secular, accommodative and pluralist tendencies of Bangladeshi people will not allow such a heinous conspiracy to turn into a reality, but nevertheless we apprehend bloodshed and conflict if the international community does not come to aid a progressive legitimate elected government to tackle this problem. If they decide to keep aloof it is very much understandable, then at least no one should create obstruction in the way of the ongoing procedures.
