As I arrived in office, five persons from village Kathowali [near Toba Tek Singh, Punjab] were waiting for us along with some comrades.

They were from Ahmadi community, one of the community facing religious intolerance and discriminatory attitude by the state. Along with them was an elderly person from the same village who was a Sunni and came to express his solidarity.

They told us what has happened during the last three months. Religious fundamentalists are eager to drive them out of the village and are harassing through different acts. Lately police has gone to the village to demolish one home of the Ahmadi build on state land in the village while all the homes of the Muslims on the state land next to him were left untouched. Fake police case was registered.

On occasions, groups of fanatics are roaming around their homes and raising slogans and threatening to kill them.

I had requested Mian Rafiq, member Punjab Assembly to come and then we could go together to see the District Coordination officer, the top district management officer, for the issue of Ahmadi community.

After a long wait at the office of DCO, Javed Iqbal Bukhari, DCO, came to see us. He was busy in a prearranged meeting. He heard us in detail and then called a meeting on Tuesday with all the relevant authorities to discuss and take actions on this issue. He made it clear that he will not let anybody harass the community.

In an hour’s time, we got a call that one of the five Liaqat Ali is arrested by Gojra police. We left our planned activity of visiting one area and went to see the district police officer Rana Mansoor. After getting information about the arrest, he told us that he was an absconder in one police case and is arrested according to the law. He could not help us and told us that if the case is false, we have to prove it.

The case registered in December 2012 alleged that Liaqat and others have stolen public school property.
The facts, however, are that there were two schools in the village, one public and one owned by Ahmadi community. The Ahmadi community wanted to change the old rooftops of their school. However, the headmistress of the public school got this case registered against few Ahmadi that they were stealing goods from public school, an allegation proved wrong in different inquiries. Still the case was pending and as used yesterday.

We asked the DPO that police should not torture Liaqat that he ordered.

We will do something today to get him out of police.
