Your April 1 education blog reported "FAU instructor in controversial Jesus assignment defends himself on website."
Deandre Poole defends himself by saying he asked students to step on a piece of paper that had Jesus written on it, using an exercise in the instructor's manual for the textbook. This clarification might vindicate Mr. Poole, but the underlying controversy cannot be oversimplified as such.
As I pondered the issue, my nine-year-old daughter happened to be around and quizzed me about it. Her instant reaction was that this was not a right thing to do, that Jesus is a prophet of God and a special person for Christians and they would be hurt and offended.
Let me add my own reaction to this thoughtless act. I am a Muslim and also am offended and hurt because I believe that Jesus is a revered prophet of God, and my sensibilities are hurt as much as the Christians. Let me also state it is an echo of my feelings when Prophet Muhammad is caricatured and insulted. Freedom of speech need not be employed blatantly to criticize and argue.
Let's hope that scholars who compile curriculum utilize sensible tools that are less controversial and don't tread upon cultural and religious sensibilities.
