Perspective: Distorting Islam in the name of Islam

Mr. Hasan thinks he will attain the status of martyr, even if he dies with a lethal injection. By using the term “martyr,” he disgraces the religion of Islam.

Re: Hasan Found Guilty Of Base Rampage, Aug. 24

Extremists follow no faith but their own selfish desires. The man convicted of the Fort Hood shootings, Nidal Hasan, was a traitor to his own nation. This individual claimed to be doing a service to the religion of Islam. The Koran teaches that a person who who kills someone unjustly is akin to the one who has killed all of mankind.

Islam teaches that loyalty to one’s country is part of faith. The leader of Ahmadiyya Muslim community says that, “to truly love God and Islam requires a person to love his nation.” If this individual thought he was performing this act to attain the praise of his religion, he could not have been further from the truth.

Mr. Hasan thinks he will attain the status of martyr, even if he dies with a lethal injection. By using the term “martyr,” he disgraces the religion of Islam. Mirza Masroor Ahmad says that, “a person is considered a martyr when martyred in the way of Allah.” When an individual does not love his nation and, in turn, does not love God, how can he be considered a martyr? As an Ahmadi Muslim, I believe extremists who have such motives should leave our country and should stop associating themselves with Islam, as the religion’s message is love for all, hatred for none.
