This week, Muslims all around the world will mark the end of Hajj (Annual pilgrimage to Mecca) by celebrating Eid. This Eid is to commemorate the sacrifice of Ishmael, offered by his father Abraham in obedience to the Will of God.
Eid literally means celebration or happiness. Eid day starts off by special prayers in congregation, followed by a sermon usually on topic of a sacrifice to remember the sacrifice of Abraham and his family.
The remaining day is spent meeting relatives and friends. Individuals also sacrifice an animal like goat or a cow to remember the sacrifice of Abraham. Most of the meat is distributed to the poor.
The leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Mirza Masroor Ahmad, reminds us to use this day to sacrifice our egos. He also reminds us in the name of peace, we should be willing to sacrifice some of our rights for the greater good.
We are also reminded to pray for the entire humanity that may individuals sacrifice animals for the benefit of the less fortunate rather than murdering one another to satisfy their vested interests.
As an Ahmadi Muslim, I believe in order for our happiness on Eid to be truly everlasting, we must strive to sacrifice the inner animal that resides within us.
