Walkers participate in the Walk For Humanity event at Cypress Trails Park in Chino on Sunday. About 150 people participated in the walk as part of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA’s Youth Organization.
CHINO >> With such a rich abundance of food in the United States, Mobarak Badoella is shocked to know so many people are still hungry.
To help bring attention to the issue, Badoella joined dozens at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Organization on Sunday for its second annual walk-a-thon to fight hunger.
Roughly 50 million Americans struggle to feed themselves, nearly half of them children, said Bilal Rana, president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Organization, in a news release.
Badoella was one of about 150 people who walked around Chino’s Cypress Trails Park on Sunday.
“How is this even possible?” said Badoella, a 53-year-old Ontario resident, about the number of people who go hungry in the U.S.. “I even heard senior citizens are suffering from hunger, and that is so painful to hear.”
The organization partnered with WhyHunger, Humanity First USA and the Harbor Community Benefit Foundation to raise funds for the cause.
Walks were also held in Maryland on Sunday, while others were held New York and Illinois on Oct. 19.
In 2012, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Organization raised $90,000, earning it Fundly.com’s Best Fundraiser by an Organization honor. This year the goal is $100,000.
The walk also is an effort to give back to the community, said Akmal Ahmed, southwest regional president for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Organization.
“Our religion is founded on two goals — to be submissive to God and to serve humanity,” he said. “Based on those two grass roots, we branched out to do these service-oriented events.”
