Members of a local youth group teamed up with a West Yorkshire environment group to plant thousands of trees

“It gives us all a sense of pride.”

The words of a Huddersfield teenager after he and his friends gave up their spare time to boost the environment.

Members of a local youth group teamed up with a West Yorkshire environment group to plant thousands of trees.

Dozens of Huddersfield volunteers from the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) joined others from across Yorkshire to plant 3,000 trees at Dewsbury Country Park.

The park is on a former landfill site between Ravensthorpe, Heckmondwike and Dewsbury Moor and is in the process of being transformed into the largest new woodland created in West Yorkshire.

With support from the Woodland Trust the park will be transformed into a jubilee Diamond Wood, and become the largest new woodland in the region.

The youth group’s work on the site also forms part of a national campaign the AMYA is running in which it is hoping to plant 50,000 trees by mid-December.

The association has already planted close to 40,000 trees this year.

Tariq Mahmood, a local AMYA youth leader and a volunteer on the day, said: “It gives us all a great sense of pride that we can do our little bit to help beautify the local area.

“It is particularly important to us that we bring as many young people to these events as possible so that they can gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the environment.

“A major motivating factor for our members is the fact that Islam places great emphasis on taking care of the environment and particularly on the planting of trees.”
