“We try to create a new theme each year. The theme this year is ‘humility and prayer.’ ... If you’re humble before God, you’ll be humble before your fellow man.”

Chino - More than 1,500 members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community are attending a religious convention at a mosque here this weekend.

The 28th annual Jalsa Salana brought together believers from across the United States and overseas.

Ahmadi — followers of the Ahmadiyya movement — believe that Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, who founded the movement in India in 1889, was the Messiah. This runs contrary to mainstream Islamic belief and has made Ahmadis the target of persecution around the world.

“He has this unifying message and we’re describing that message to our guests,” said Ahsan Mahmood Khan, president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s L.A. East chapter.

The three-day conference, featuring lectures on the perils of arrogance, achievements of the Ahmadi community and atheism (“the biggest challenge of our times”).

“We try to create a new theme each year,” Khan said. “The theme this year is ‘humility and prayer.’ ... If you’re humble before God, you’ll be humble before your fellow man.”

Ahmad held the first convention in 1891 in India.

“He felt there was an opportunity for the locals to reap the blessings of hospitality,” Khan said.

The gathering wasn’t all serious, though. The Jalsa Salana also featured bake sales, crafts for sale, events for children and a two-day basketball tournament.
