USA: Ahmadiyya Muslim Community mourns passing of Dr. Yusef Lateef


As an example of his religious devotion and exemplary faith, Dr. Lateef performed only in establishments that did not serve alcohol because he came to believe music shouldn't be presented in alcohol-and-smoke cellars.

Dr. Yusef Lateef, American Muslim Icon & Grammy Award-Winning Musician Dies at 93

Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA mourns the passing of al-Hajj Dr. Abdul Yusef Lateef on December 23, 2013.

Dr. Lateef died at his home in Shutesbury, Massachusetts surrounded by family and friends after a brief illness. From God we are and to God must we return.

Dr. Lateef accepted Islam in 1948 and was a selfless stalwart of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community for the last 65 years. Publically, he is best known for his Grammy Award-winning musical talents and his numerous books on music and spirituality. Dr. Lateef, affectionately known as the “Gentle Giant,” was a devout and practicing Muslim and believed his faith and music were inextricably intertwined. As an example of his religious devotion and exemplary faith, Dr. Lateef performed only in establishments that did not serve alcohol because he came to believe music shouldn't be presented in alcohol-and-smoke cellars.

“Dr. Lateef was a brilliant scholar and educator, a ground-breaking musician, and a passionate Ahmadi Muslim brother,” said Dr. Nasim Rehmatullah, Vice President Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, “and his unique contributions to humanity and Islam, which are well known, will continue to benefit the world far into the future. We love him and offer our heartfelt prayers for him and his grieving family. Members of our Community, young and old, will deeply miss him.”

Calling hours are scheduled for Thursday, December 26, from 3 to 5:15 p.m. Funeral prayers will be held at 5:15 p.m. at the Douglass Funeral Home located at 87 N. Pleasant Street, Amherst, MA.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, established in 1920, is among the first American-Muslim organizations.

The worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Community spans more than 200 countries with membership exceeding tens of millions.
