Children helped to plant 1,000 trees in what will become West Yorkshire’s largest new woodland.

Around 100 young volunteers from Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) planted the trees in the Diamond Wood being created at Dewsbury Country Park to mark the Queen’s Jubilee.

The seven to 15 year olds worked alongside Bradford Environmental Action Trust members during Saturday’s planting session. The event was part of the association’s national tree planting initiative with the Woodland Trust.

AMYA Yorkshire spokesman Dr Bilal Bhatti said: “Our members are absolutely delighted that they have the opportunity to contribute towards improving the environment. Both safeguarding and beautifying the planet is an important part of our faith as Muslims and indeed a united ambition shared by people of all faiths and backgrounds.

“Events such as these also help to promote good community relations and our members are keen to get involved in similar schemes in the future.”

Last month older members of the association helped to plant around 2,800 trees on the site. Visit our website to see a slideshow with more pictures from the event.
