Honorable Member of Parliament (MP) for Constituency 57, representing the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) party, Hon. Abu-Bakarr Koroma on Thursday 20th March 2014 awarded scholarships to 105 pupils in the constituency. He said the scholarship was in line with President Koroma’s Agenda for Prosperity and that beneficiaries were selected from among under-privileged and clever pupils randomly from three primary and five secondary schools in Mamamah, Masiaka, Mile 91, Mile 98 and Kwama communities in the Port Loko district.

Hon. Koroma told parents, teachers and beneficiaries that he was awarding the scholarships in order to encourage children in the constituency to improve on their academic work. He informed that many parents in the constituency have clever children but that these parents cannot afford paying their school fees.

The Honorable went on that the scholarship was given to him by one of the leading mining companies in the country, the African Minerals Limited, for onward donation to the children. He expressed hope that the scholarship was timely as some parents especially those who are subsistent farmers were badly in need of fees for their children.

He advised beneficiaries to work hard in order to continue maintaining the scholarship.

Each of the beneficiaries received assorted school materials including school bags, books and other much needed learning materials and cash to meet their school charges.

Principal of Ahmadiyya Muslim Secondary School in Masiaka, Mr. Ibrahim Tommy Bull, expressed thanks and appreciation to Hon. Koroma for awarding the scholarships to the children. He said the payment of school fees has been one of the major challenges faced by parents in the community. As he put it, many parents delay in paying their children’s school fees due to hardship and other related factors.

One of the beneficiaries, Abu–Bakarr Kargbo of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Secondary School said the help came in at the right time, while thanking the MP for selecting him as one of the beneficiaries.

He said there was no way his parents could have afforded to pay his school charges as both parents are very poor farmers.

He pleaded to the MP and African Minerals to continue their support to them and to also extend the gesture to other surrounding communities.
