A MUSLIM community group has eased the burden on hard-up Burton families with a generous donation to a food bank.

The Burton branch of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Group donated £400 worth of tinned goods to the town’s branch of the Salvation Army, which operates in Mosley Street.

It is hoped the donation will help tackle food poverty in East Staffordshire, which is believed to have soared in the last three years.

The group’s president Syed Raheel Sakria said: “Our local women’s association have been collecting the food over a period of weeks.

“They managed to collect over £400 worth of food in a matter of weeks, the equivalent of food a family throws away every year.

“It makes you realise how much can be done if we all did our bit he said and supported wonderful campaigns like those being run by the Salvation Army.

“Islam is a religion that teaches us to be charitable, the holy prophet Muhammad said ‘he who sleeps with his stomach full while his neighbour sleeps hungry, is not one of us.’”

He added: “The local Ahmadiyya Muslim Community branch has only recently been established but we are keen to work with local charities and groups.”
