Asylum shelter: After threats and conflicts with two injured, fear prevails in the shelter - Call for help via letter to authorities. Aggressive resident to be moved from asylum shelter.

Gemünden/ Germany - Fear prevails in the asylum shelter in Gemünden after a conflicts with two injured: an argument during which two were wounded was just the latest trigger. 20 residents have written a letter demanding transfer of the man who is described as confused and aggressive. A solution is expected in the beginning of the next week.

The man has come to attention previously and the responsible authorities in Unterfranken have indicated he will be transfered to a residency outside the county. The residents have been feeling threatened for an extended period of time. The open argument during which the police had to intervene occurred on Sunday evening on the 31st of March. The residents described the background for the conflict in an alerting letter to the District Office in Main-Spessart.

The letter states that women in the shelter fear the man. He is a danger to the lives of children; he insults and threats with a knife, and alcohol-related violence is also addressed in the letter.  The aggrieved party makes up the largest group in the shelter. They are from Pakistan and belong to the Ahmadiyya community, a reformist Islamic group. In Pakistan as well as in other Muslim countries the Muslim majority of Sunnis persecute the Ahmadiyya followers.

Beyond a religious conflict

Ahmdis fled from the persecution back home and are now threatened in Gemünden by the Sunni occupant who is also originally from Pakistan. But the religious differences are not thought to be the only cause for the aggressive behavior. There are no problems with other Sunni Muslims in the shelter in Gemünden.

The Pakistani man is known to the respective authority in Unterfranken, which is accountable for the accommodation of the asylum seeker. He has lived in Gemünden since the beginning of 2013 and was living in a different shelter previously.

There, too, problems were caused with other residents, press spokesperson Johannes Hardenacke confirmed.

Hardenacke pointed out that when it comes to the distribution of asylum seekers the social compatibility of ethnic groups and individuals is definitely considered. However, tension and conflict could never be excluded in a community shelter with many different people who all have a personal (refugee) story.

In individual cases it is possible that asylum seekers find it difficult to integrate into the population of the community shelter. The causes for this vary from personal experiences to separation from family to particular personality conflicts and dismay. Addiction problems can also give rise to potential conflicts just like in other societies and communities.

“Of course we make efforts to establish a harmonious environment in the shelters; in particular individual cases, including in the past, we could not always avoid transfers to solve local conflicts”, conveyed a spokesperson for the government.

With a transfer in the coming week the conflict situation is supposed to be solved in Gemünden.
