NEW BRUNSWICK – A religious group will hold a conference Tuesday on the Prophet Muhammad, the central figure of Islam.

Hosted by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, the conference will take place from 6:30 p.m. 9 p.m. at the Rutgers Student Center, 126 College Ave. on the New Brunswick campus.

"This event is an opportunity for people of all backgrounds to learn about Prophet Muhammad from practicing American Muslims," the group said in a news release. "Over the past several years Prophet Muhammad's character has been maligned on numerous occasions, including a hateful video. This event provides an educational and civil response, demonstrates why over 1 billion Muslims revere Prophet Muhammad, and serves to build bridges of understanding."

The group, which dates to the late 1800s, calls the Prophet Muhammad "history's most peace-loving person."

Assemblymen Raj Mukherji and Upendra Chivukula are expected to attend, according to the organization. Tuesday's event is one of 70 being held around the country.

According to the group, which claims tens of millions of members: "The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is the only Islamic organization to believe that the long-awaited messiah has come in the person of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (1835-1908) of Qadian, India. Ahmad claimed to be the metaphorical second coming of Jesus of Nazareth and the divine guide, whose advent was foretold by the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad. The Community believes that God sent Ahmad, like Jesus, to end religious wars, condemn bloodshed and reinstitute morality, justice and peace. Ahmad’s advent has brought about an unprecedented era of Islamic revival and moderation. He divested Muslims of fanatical beliefs and practices by vigorously championing Islam’s true and essential teachings."
