State funeral was yesterday held for the late Ameer and Missionary-in-charge of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission in Ghana, Maulvi Dr. Wahab Adam, with politicians, Muslim clerics, traditional and Christian leaders and members of the Ahmadiyya sect paying their last respects to the revered former head of the Ahmadiyya Mission.
He was elevated to the high position of the Ameer and Missionary In-charge in 1975 and served in that capacity with distinction until he passed on over the weekend at the age of 75.
He was a member of the National Peace Council, President of Ghana Conference of Religions for Peace, Vice Chairman of Ghana Integrity Initiative, Member of the National Media Commission, Member of Ghana Education Service Council Board, Scholar with the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Scholar with the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) and Member of Trustees of the Otumfuo Education Fund.
The late Ameer and Missionary In-charge was credited with the establishment of Hilal Committee, a platform for the consideration of common interest among Muslims and the granting of national holidays to mark Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha festivals on the Islamic calendar.
Personalities who attended the State funeral held at the forecourt of the State House, included Vice President Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur and some Ministers of State. Mahama Ayariga, the Minister for Information and Media Relations, was present. Members of Parliament (MPs); the Chief Iman, Sheikh Dr. Nuhu Sharabutu; President of the National Peace Council, Rev Prof Emmanuel Asante; President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Ghana, Rev Joseph Osei-Bonsu; Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Alhassan and a host of old politicians including Iddrisu Mahama, former Minister of Defence and Alhassan Yakubu, former Interior Minister under the previous Kufuor administration.
A delegation of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the funeral was led by the General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, while a strong delegation of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) was also led by the National Chairman, Paul Afoko.
Among the NPP delegation were the First Vice National Chairman, Freddie Blay; General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong; National Organiser, John Boadu and Women’s Organiser, Otiko Djaba.
Also present were NPP presidential aspirant, Alan Kyerematen and running mate to Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2012 general elections, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was represented by his Nsumankwahene, Baffour Asabere Kogyawoasu Ababio II
A tribute was read on behalf of the President, who is attending an AU Summit in Equatorial Guinea and the government by Mr Mahama Ayariga.
The Information Minister described the late head of the Ahmadiyya as a “true patriot and a man of peace.”
He said Maulvi Adam played significant roles in bringing Muslims and Christians together for co-existence, stressing that the late Ameer had strong passion in promoting peace between the various Islamic faiths, as well as Christians and Muslims.
He noted that late Ameer’s sterling performance while serving on the National Media Commission, helped to shape the media landscape in the country.
Mr Ayariga said the late Maulvi Adams’s invaluable contributions to the growth of the society won him numerous national and international awards.
He appealed to the Ahmadiyya Mission to continue to partner the government in its effort to consolidate peace and promote development in the country.
The Presidents of the National Peace Council and Catholic Bishops Conference of Ghana also paid glowing tribute to the departed Missionary In-charge for his selfless service to humanity.
The newly-appointed Acting Ameer and Missionary In-charge, Maulvi Alhaji Mohammed Bin Salih, was introduced at the event after which he led what is known in Islam as ‘Janaza’ prayers for the soul of the departed head of the mission before the body was conveyed to the Ahmadiyya Cemetery at Kasoa for burial.
The Book of Condolence, which was opened for the late Ameer at the Mission’s headquarters, would be closed to the public after tomorrow, Friday, 27th June, 2014.
