The Wassa East District Office of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has initiated a programme to improve reading and writing skills of children in basic schools in remote parts of the district, Mr. Daniel Osei Twumasi, an official at the GES district office, said on Thursday.
“The programme is to encourage children to cultivate the reading and writing habit and ensure that children are able to understand what they read”, he said.
Mr. Twumasi was speaking at a reading and writing festival organized by the district office of GES for reading and writing clubs in nine basic schools in the area at Sekyere Abroadzewurom.
The school were the Sekyere Heman, Adiembra I.T. Ahmadiyya, Essaman, Sekyere Aboaboso District Assembly (D/A), Ebukrom D/A and Abroadzewuram Basic Schools as well as the Abroadzewuram Oxford, Ebukrom Oxford and Saint Peters Preparatory Schools.
Mr. Twumasi said the Mpohor Wassa East Area Development Programme of World Vision Ghana, the Mondelez International and the Cocoa Life are supporting the reading and writing programme.
Mr. Evans Owusu, development facilitator in-charge of education of the Mpohor Wassa East Area Development Programme of World Vision Ghana, used the occasion to appeal to the Birth and Death Registry to obtain an office at Daboase, the district capital.
He said parents who want to obtain birth certificates for their children in the district have to travel all the way to Sekondi to do so.
