More than 3000 people voted for the Guardian Voluntary Sector Network's volunteer of the year and we can now reveal the result

Over the last week we asked readers, Twitter followers and Facebook friends to vote for the Guardian Voluntary Sector Network's volunteer of the year.

More than 3000 of you have cast your vote and we are pleased to announce that with 45% of the vote Kamal Aftab is the winner.

Aftab, who has won an iPad Air, is a Huddersfield-based optometrist who volunteers as a regional youth leader and mentor for Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Associations (AMYA) – a charity that seeks to teach young people life skills by engaging them in community and charitable initiatives.

Aftab has worked on countless projects for different charities and even rallied a team together to travel to Somerset during this year's floods.

About Kamal Aftab

Kamal Aftab, a Huddersfield-based optometrist, volunteers as a regional youth leader and mentor of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Associations (AMYA) – a charity that seeks to teach young people life skills by engaging them in community and charitable initiatives.

Aftab has worked on a countless projects for different charities and is said to lead by example. Madeem Ahmed, a youth leader at AMYA, explains that most evenings, weekends and holidays Aftab is involved with charity work.

During this year's floods Aftab rallied a team and travelled the 450-mile round trip to Burrowbridge, Somerset. He and his team worked with the army and local residents, lifting sandbags and laying woodchip. He has since started a campaign to raise the money to regenerate Burrowbridge.

Aftab has also been working on a project to establish a free eye clinic in Burkina Faso, West Africa, to help patients who suffer from refractive error. The groundwork has been completed and he will fly out later this year to begin the final stage of the project.
