UK: Ahmadiyya Muslim Community peace walk raises more than £220,000 for UK charities

More than 1,600 members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community (AMC) descended on the Baitul Futuh Mosque in Morden to set off for a five mile charity walk on Saturday, June 8.

Muslims from across Britain raised more than £220,000 for 40 charities during a weekend walk for peace.

More than 1,600 members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community (AMC) descended on the Baitul Futuh Mosque in Morden to set off for a five mile charity walk on Saturday, June 8.

On the day, £146,000 was donated to 27 charities, including the White Lodge Centre, which supports people with M.E., the British Heart Foundation and crime prevention charity, The Senior Citizen Liaison Team.

The final total raised is expected to be about £300,000 which will benefit a further 13 charities.

Naseer Zafar, who took part in the walk, said: "The atmosphere was very friendly. It was a fun day out, the weather was very nice and people enjoyed it."

Trekkers set off at 11am and were back for lunch by 1pm.

Merton Mayor councillor Agatha Akyigyina and Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon were among the walkers.

The walk marked 100 years since the AMC was established in the UK.

A spokesman for the AMC said: "We have been organising these walks for the last 28 years up and down the country and since its inception in 1985, over 90 UK based charities have benefited in providing specialised care and assistance to most vulnerable people."
