Canada: New Canadians embrace local celebrations

[O]n Boychuk Drive, [Saskatoon,] about 100 Ahmadiyya Muslims gathered to the raise the Canadian flag, sing the national anthem and celebrate the holiday together.

“I’m really excited to celebrate, I came here at 9:30 and I made all this stuff here,” said Rashid Ahmed Tuesday afternoon, gesturing excitedly to the red-and-white banners, balloons and flags that surrounded the outside his mosque.

The 24-year-old who came from Pakistan in 2012 was visibly thrilled to be celebrating Canada Day.

“I love this country, I’m proud to be Canadian,” he said.

Taukeer Ashraf, who helped organize the celebration, said many of those gathered were immigrants.

“I think a lot of people don’t realize how much immigrants love the country that they come to,” he said. “My fellow members who have immigrated here love this country to a degree that I can’t even imagine.”
