As an Ahmadi Muslim, born and raised in Canada, it is a privilege to have the freedom to express my views, especially seeing that my fellow Ahmadi Muslims are persecuted in almost all Muslim countries. It is that much more troubling for me to hear about someone like Martin Rouleau, a resident of Quebec who abused this freedom by expressing his extremist views, while associating himself with Islam.

All cases of extremism, especially those involving Islam share a common factor — a lack of guidance and leadership. Indeed, true Islamic principles are not found within ISIS, an organization which spreads terror and havoc under the banner of Islam. For real leadership, I, along with millions of peace loving Muslims, turn towards Mirza Masroor Ahmad, leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, a man who constantly reminds and encourages us to spread the peaceful and tolerant nature of Islam.

After seeing this incident on the news, I could not help but feel tense on the way to Friday prayers. What if today was the day that someone attacks my mosque as a statement against ISIS? There seems to be a misunderstanding in the air concerning ISIS and Islam as one in the same. I plea to my fellow Canadians to try to understand that ISIS has no affiliation to any religion in the world.

Although the incident in Cold Lake gave me great sorrow, it also gave me pride in calling myself a Canadian Ahmadi Muslim. Locals of Cold Lake exhibited great love by helping clean the vandalized mosque. It just goes to show that the same way Canada has a few bad apples, so too does Islam. But deep down we know the people who commit such atrocious crimes are neither Canadian nor Muslim.
