The Muslim community here in Kingston is hoping to raise awareness through a campaign called “stop the crisis.” it was launched in the wake of groups — like isis — committing extreme violence in the name of Islam. Newswatch’s Jonna Semple explains.
ISIS, radicalisation, extremists and the Middle East. These are words we’ve been hearing a lot lately — but perhaps not fully understanding. Mirza Tahir Ahmed is hoping to clear up misconceptions of Muslim culture and the Islamic religion through a nationwide campaign called Stop-The-crISIS.
Mirza Tahir Ahmed – Kingston Ahmadiyya Muslim group president: “We want to tell the fellow Canadians that we believe our religion is hijacked by these jihaddies, terrorist groups, or any Islamic radicalised people who are doing violence in the world. ”
Ahmed immigrated to Canada in 2010 and is now a PHD student at queen’s university.
As a passionate Canadian resident and Muslim — he hopes the campaign will highlight how unhappy the Muslim community is with groups like ISIS — which stands for “Islamic state of Iraq and Syria.” He says ISIS is using Islam to justify beheadings and other terrible crimes.

This Queen’s expert on radicalization says groups like ISIS are small, but getting worldwide headlines for their radical behavior.
“When we talk about the extreme it is the very, very extreme who do these be headings it is a new phenomena.”
Next Monday evening, an event will take place at John A McDonald Hall at queen’s — with lectures, presentations and q-and-a session with Islamic scholars … delving deeper into the misconceptions. Jonna Semple-ckws newswatch kingston.
