A Canadian Muslim group is once again showing its support for veterans on Remembrance Day.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has launched its 4th Annual Muslims for Remembrance Day campaign — a nationwide campaign which is taking on a deeper meaning this year in light of the recent deadly attacks on soldiers by men who supposedly converted to Islam and adopted the extremist ideology of the Middle Eastern group Canadian Forces members are currently fighting there.
Members of the group are selling poppies, collecting donations for the Royal Canadian Legion, and taking part in Remembrance Day ceremonies across the country, including here in Montreal.
Community spokesperson Khalid Butt says the campaign was conceived as a way for the community to show that they, too, are Canadians — in fact, he says loyalty to one's nation is a religious requirement.
"Loyalty to your nation is part of our faith," Butt says. "We adhere to this teaching of Islam and by doing that, we are showing our support for people in uniform all across Canada."
