Young Muslims hope this participation shows their desire for peace and unity between all people, nations and religions
Muslims are raising thousands of pounds for the Poppy Appeal to honour their country as they say their religion teaches them to do.
Over this Remembrance weekend, 40 young Muslims from south West London will be joining hundreds belonging to the largest and oldest standing Islamic Caliphate by taking to the Wembley Stadium to collect cash.
Hundreds of volunteers from Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) across London, partnered with the Royal British Legion for the fifth year running, are taking part in this appeal.
Since the beginning of October, more than a thousand young Muslims belonging to AMYA have been collecting in high streets, rail and tube stations, stadiums and airports around the UK, raising thousands of pounds.
Earlier in the year, they were also actively involved in the Tower of London Poppy installation which continues to draw large crowds.
The youngsters believe loyalty to one’s country is an integral part of Islamic faith.
Millions of Ahmadi Muslims across the world follow a single leader, the Caliph Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, who lives in London.
Mr Ahmad said: “Honouring those who fought to defend and safeguard one’s country is an important principle of Islam and an important principle of peace – especially when it is carried out with a sincere heart and for the sake of winning God’s pleasure.”
Deborah Armantrading at The Royal British Legion said: “AMYA have been crucial in raising funds for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal for several years participating in mass collections all over the UK. The Legion are extremely pleased with the enthusiasm and commitment from all the volunteers.”
Mirza Waqas Ahmad, National President of AMYA said: “One of the fundamental teachings of the Holy Quran is that the reward for goodness is goodness alone. The UK has provided us with so many opportunities for which we are truly grateful. As Muslims it is our responsibility to show loyalty to our country of residence and stand together for a worthy cause.
“We hope our participation is a clear indication of our desire for peace and unity between all people, nations and religions.”
Prime Minister David Cameron, said: “It’s great to see AMYA joining thousands of people across the country to help our brave servicemen and women, veterans and their loved ones. I hope this year’s appeal will continue the proud tradition of our whole nation coming together to support our troops.”
