UK: Caliph of Ahmadiyya Muslims Calls on UK Imams to Promote Islamic Message of Peace

He blames the attraction of IS on two principle problems – money and education. Although the Ahmadiyya sect is small, no members have joined Islamic State, a situation Ahmad says is down to the emphasis given to the peaceful teachings of the Qur’an during youth work.

In an interview published in The Guardian newspaper on Sunday, a leading British Muslim leader has called for greater understanding of disenfranchised youths who travel to fight for Islamic State, and a recognition that the vast majority of Muslims worldwide seek peace.

In the past week, senior UK politicians have called for British youths who fight for IS to have their passports withdrawn – a move widely ridiculed as both headline grabbing and illegal.

Ahmad believes that those returning from Jihad should be given a second chance, “These are the frustrated people, educated people, they don’t get a proper job here and so the education is not giving them any return. They are frustrated. I myself feel their frustration.

These people deserve a second chance. If they come back, of course we have to be vigilant and keep an eye on them.”

He blames the attraction of IS on two principle problems – money and education. Although the Ahmadiyya sect is small, no members have joined Islamic State, a situation Ahmad says is down to the emphasis given to the peaceful teachings of the Qur’an during youth work.

He also claims that teaching a ’love of country’ is important, “The young people here have been raised in this country and they understand English, they should not be having to hear the messages of the Qur’an in Urdu or Punjabi, or just in Arabic alone. They should be well versed in their religious education as well as in their secular education in English.

“A lot of sensible people are trying to understand that Islam is not bad but it’s hard at the moment,” he said. “If Isis kill 10 people, it is widely aired. If we pledge 1,000 to peace, nobody cares.”

The funding of IS is a major concern for the caliph. He claimed that millions of dollars are flowing from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, money that is used in the recruitment of young fighters. “In other countries their families are given money – even here, if he goes he gets a lump sum of money.”

Ultimately Ahmad hopes that the extremist group will be eliminated, “What did the Taliban and al-Qaida gain? Their achievement was much higher 20 years ago than now. The same fate awaits IS.”
