Upland, California: ‘I am not ISIS,’ imam tells interfaith event

Murder and persecution of Muslims, Christians and Kurds in Iraq and Syria are “un-Islamic” and forbidden by that religion, Chino’s resident imam told the 19th annual Upland prayer breakfast last month, according to a news release issued by Baitul Hameed Mosque in Chino.

“I am not ISIS,” Mohammed Zafarullah told the interfaith audience. “I am a Muslim who believes in the messiah, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, who founded the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. Our motto is ‘love for all, hatred for none,’ and we have condemned terrorism and jihad by the sword since 1889. I am here to work together with all of you in peace and for peace and interfaith cooperation.”

Imam Zafarullah, who was transferred to Southern California from Houston in July, made his first appearance Oct. 23 at the annual interfaith event, sponsored by Upland Interfaith Council.

He called for remembrance of the sacrifice and honor for the service of members of police and fire departments and the armed forces, according to the news release. He also recited a brief prayer for God’s mercy and blessings on America, the release states.

The imam invited participants to attend the Saturday session of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s annual West Coast convention, scheduled for Dec. 27. Baitul Hameed Mosque is located at 11941 Ramona Ave.
