Man recalls his own brush with terror in Pakistan

A Saskatoon man questions how can you reason with a group responsible for killing 141 innocent people including 130 children.

“I don’t think there are words that can describe it, it's a barbaric act nothing can be more cowardly than attacking innocent children and of course my thoughts go out to families there,” said Nasser Malik, president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim group in Saskatoon.

“I would not even call these people humans there is no shred of humanity in what they did so how do you reason with people who are like this?”

Originally from Pakistan, what Malik saw on the news following the military school massacre in Peshawar brought back painful memories of when he was living in Pakistan.

“In 1974 my house was burned down and I was very young and I have no memories of that but whenever I think about it I can still smell that smell of burning furniture,” Malik said.

His father told him the story of a group of anti-Islamic clerics who were out to cull Muslims for their liberal interpretations of Islam and Malik’s father was in their crosshairs.

“My dad was always a target … he was attacked personally a few times and just before we knew there was a mob coming to attack our house, we ran and hid with our neighbours,” Malik said, adding he can still hear the footsteps of the large mob marching closer to his home in Lahore 400 kilometres southeast of Peshawar.

Malik said the tragedies in Peshawar will most likely stick with him and his family as it falls on the same day as one of his son’s birthdays.

“What a memory to have attached to his birthday he just turned five today.”
