It’s so unfortunate that a massive tragedy like this has woken up the politicians, who have now taken a united front in vowing to root out terrorism from Pakistan.

Re. School massacre highlights Pakistan’s existential struggle with extremism: Editorial, Dec. 17

For years the Pakistani government has allowed the extremists to freely run around and perpetrate various heinous crimes. In September 2013 the Taliban killed around 80 individuals in a Peshawar church attack; in January 2013 the extremists killed 120 Hazara Shia Muslim minority in Quetta; and in May 2010 the Taliban stormed two Ahmadiyya mosques killing more than 80 individuals. Few murmurs were heard to condemn the atrocities then and nothing was done to combat terrorism.

It’s so unfortunate that a massive tragedy like this has woken up the politicians, who have now taken a united front in vowing to root out terrorism from Pakistan.
I just hope their counter-terrorism policy has plans to prosecute those individuals who have soft corners for the religious militants and the mullahs who teach this perverted ideology in their madrassas. Only stopping the militants will not be enough in eliminating terrorism from Pakistan.
