More than 100 children — all less than 15 years old — were killed in Pakistan on Tuesday in one of the worst attacks on a school in human history.

While we were coming to terms with the Sydney siege, this tragedy unfolded. Lest we forget, the greatest casualties at the hands of the extremists are Muslims. They reverted to a new low and targeted helpless, innocent children in a school. This year's Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai escaped an attack on her life by these very elements.

Many in Pakistan deemed her a Western agent, and conspiracy theories were rife when she was attacked. This attack should crystallize the situation. It shows that Taliban are hellbent upon ruining Pakistan. There is nothing that can appease these hate-mongers. They are claiming this attack a retaliation against Pakistan Army's operation against their strongholds in North West Pakistan. However, ending the military operation will not assuage their demands.

A complete annihilation of these extremists is the only viable solution. This requires a strong political will of the Pakistani government; Taliban must be dealt with an iron fist. The apologists and naysayers within the government and military ranks must be identified. Pakistan needs to arrive at a consensus that confronting the Taliban is in the best interest of Pakistan. It needs to fight them for its survival and not only at America's behest. Identifying the real enemy is the first step in formulating a concrete strategy to counter the menace of extremism.
