The 31st Annual National Ijtema (Convention) organised by the Ahmadiyya Jammat Youth Association in The Gambia on Sunday ended at the Tahir Ahmadiyya Muslim Senior School in Mansakonko in the Lower River Region (LRR).
Attended by prominent people including the governor of LRR, Salif Puye; Hon. Njie Darboe of Jarra West, Amir Baba F Trawally, among others, the ultimate objective of the three-day convention was to bring the youth together to teach them moral values, true teaching of Islam and to make them productive citizen of the society.
It was expected that at the end of the convergence, which brought together people from across the seven regions and as far as Senegal and Guinea Bissau, participants would have in their minds that they need to be tolerant in looking at the present condition of the world.
Salif Puye, the governor of LRR said the trend on which the world is going should be a concern to all and sundry.
According to him, the solution to the problem should be to indoctrinate the younger children with good morals standards, that they are able to read and understand the Quran. "If anyone has gone through the doctrine of the Quran, I don't believe you will become an extremist or dogma in your religion," Governor Puye noted.
He called on parents to train their children on the right path to maintain peace in the society, noting that the world was built through peace and dignity.
The LRR governor thus thanked the Ahmadiyya Jammat for organising such an event in his region.
In his welcoming remarks during the opening ceremony on Friday, Mr. Abubacarr Nyabally, principal of Tahir Ahmadiyya Senior School who is also the regional president of the Ahmadiyya Youth Association in LRR described the gathering as an important day in the history of Majlis Khudammul Ahmadiyyat as they gathered in his school to celebrate the 31st National Ijtema (Convention) in LRR.
On behalf of the people of the region, Mr. Nyabally used the opportunity to welcome all the delegates who left their busy schedules to the convergence.
"We all know that the youth of any country are the backbone of every nation and that is why we have gathered here to compliment the efforts of the government.
We know that our gathering here today is to create unity, understanding, friendship, bond of brotherhood relationship among us," the Principal of Tahir Senior School told the gathering. He encouraged the delegates to disseminate the knowledge to be gained from the speakers during the course of the three-day.
On his part, Hon. Njie Darboe of Jarra West Constituency said he is very much glad for the hosting of this important meeting.
He described religion as very important, saying they are teaching each other to be aware of each other's religion, which is very important and to give respect to all religions. This, he said, is what President Jammeh has being advocating for.
Hon. Darboe expressed delight for seeing children in the event, something he said will help them to know their religion and be religion tolerant.
Tahir Ahmed Touray, the president of National Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association spoke at length on the heinous crimes being committed around the world by extremist groups in the name of Islam, citing the beheading of British Journalist by ISIS, abduction of 200 girls in Nigeria by Boko Haram, and killing of innocent people in Palestine. These among other acts, he said are against Islam and do not represent the doctrines of Islam.
According to him, the beautiful face of Islam has been tarnished with murder, violence, hate, intolerance, and lack of respect for human dignity among others, noting that Islam does not promote such heinous acts.
Touray used the event to call on Muslims to heed by the teaching and preaching of the Quran and the Prophet Muhammed (SAW). He went on to say that the whole world is in fear, as no country is immune to acts being committed by the terrorist groups. "At the end of this gathering, we would like everyone to have that sense of tolerance as Muslims," he affirmed.
Imam Njie Kanteh of Pakalinding Village thanked the Ahmadiyya Jamaat for organising the event, while using the gathering to call for religious tolerance among the Muslims.
