As a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, I am all too familiar with what the wrong understanding of blasphemy means to fanatics. Pakistani minorities are routinely falsely charged with blasphemy based on the country's laws. My cousins survived the Lahore Mosque terrorist attack, yet 86 Ahmadi Muslims were massacred while praying. Why? Because of the abhorrent belief that blasphemy in Islam should be a punishable act. The attack on Charlie Hebdo is yet another tragedy fallen upon mankind as a result of this erroneous blasphemy concept.
Terrorists use their religious immorality for political gains. Islam and Prophet Muhammad guided Muslims to believe that life is sacrosanct and specifically forbids any worldly punishment for mockery or blasphemy.
The culprits behind the Charlie Hebdo atrocity have violated every Islamic tenet of compassion, justice and peace. The killing yesterday of French Muslim police officer Ahmed Merabet defending Charlie Hebdo continues to demonstrate that terrorism has no religion and it is the extreme ideologies of fanatics that are the true plague on humanity.
