Malaysia: We risk being labelled ‘deviant’ ourselves by supporting Ahmadis, says G25 rep

"If I or the G25 were to champion the cause of the Ahmadi community of whom I know very little, we would probably be declared deviant by Jakim and the other Islamic authorities."

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 3 — Datuk Noor Farida Ariffin of the group called G25 has defended her recent slight of the Ahmadiyya community, saying the group and her might face censure from religious authorities if they lent their support.

The former ambassador said the G25 has already been accused by some for “insulting Islam” simply for stating the supremacy of the Federal Constitution, and therefore she did not wish to dabble in matters of faith.

“If I or the G25 were to champion the cause of the Ahmadi community of whom I know very little, we would probably be declared deviant by Jakim and the other Islamic authorities,” Noor Farida told Malay Mail Online in a text message yesterday.

“I’m sorry but the Ahmadis will have to resolve this issue with Jakim and Jais and the other Islamic authorities in the other states without involving us,” she said, referring to both the federal and Selangor Islamic authorities by their acronyms.

The Ahmadiyya community earlier told Malay Mail Online that it delivered a copy of the Ahmadiyya translation of the Quran to Noor Farida two weeks ago, but the latter had rejected it a day after receiving it.

In a copy of her email that was sighted by Malay Mail Online, Noor Farida told the community’s representative Indrawan Ahmad that she could not accept the gift after discussing the matter with several religious leaders.

Noor Farida said that she uses a Quran with Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s English translation, and the Ahmadi Quran might differ from the Shafi’i school of jurisprudence that she practises.

Now comprising 38 members, the G25 is made of former high-ranking civil servants and was named for its original 25 members who penned an open letter urging Putrajaya to rollback the growing Islamisation in Malaysia.

In a strongly-worded letter in December last year, the group called on the federal government to review Shariah criminal offences and assert the supremacy of the Federal Constitution over Islamic state laws in the country.

“The question is why did she hastily rejected it? She should have been open and accept it. She can do a research about allegations that there are augmentations made to the Ahmadi Quran as accused by Jais,” said a separate statement by the community on Sunday.

The Ahmadis, also called Qadianis here, adhere to the same beliefs as the Sunni branch of Islam, but also believe that their founder Mirza Ghulam Ahmad was the Imam Mahdi, Islam’s prophesied redeemer.

In Malaysia where only the Sunni branch is officially recognised, the Ahmadiyya community was declared “deviants” by the Selangor religious authorities and subsequently forbidden to host Friday prayers in its central mosque in Selayang, Selangor.
