COBOURG - In spite of the impression that may have been left by recent events in the news, Islam does not support or promote terrorism.

To battle the Islamaphobia that can result from such a misconception, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association has launched a nation-wide campaign to hold open houses on the teachings of Islam in 33 locations across Canada — including the one planned for Saturday at the Cobourg Public Library.

The purpose of the session, which runs from noon to 4 p.m., is to educate people about the true teachings of Islam.

With the growing Islamaphobia inspired by the acts of such extremist groups as ISIS and Al-Qaida — from recruitment and radicalization to terrorist attacks on Canada's Parliament Hill and the French magazine Charlie Hebdo — the group considers it a timely exercise to condemn terrorism and dispel misconceptions about Islam.

In that spirit, local residents are invited to attend the open house to learn what the Holy Quran truly teaches about blasphemy and freedom of speech.

Does the Holy Quran permit free speech and, if so, to what extent? What is the Holy Quran's true teachings regarding blasphemy? Does the Holy Quran justify any kind of killing in the name of freedom of speech — or blasphemy?

Members of the youth organization will be in Cobourg Saturday to answer these and other questions you may have.
