The siege by Somali Islamists of a university in northeastern Kenya on Thursday has ended, leaving at least 147 dead and scores injured in its aftermath, Kenya's disaster response agency has reported.
"UPDATE: 147 fatalities confirmed in the Garissa Attack," The Kenya National Disaster Operation Centre tweeted on its official feed, adding that the operation had ended.
Al-Shabab gunmen stormed Garissa University College at dawn Thursday, carrying out the group's bloodiest attack in the East African country.
Officials said four of the gunmen were killed by security forces.
The attack which turned into a hostage siege, according to a report by The Associated Press, continued into the evening hours.
Masked militants of Al-Shabab "separated Christian students from Muslims, and then gunned them down without mercy," survivors said according to AP. "Others ran for their lives with bullets whistling through the air, and hundreds of students remained unaccounted for more than 11 hours after the bloodshed began."
Keny's Interior Minister Joseph Nkaissery said authorities were only able to account for 292 of the university's 815 students more than 11 hours after the start of the attack.
Nkaissery said all 60 members of the school's staff were accounted for.
