Pakistan’s state-sponsored religious persecution of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community continues under recommendations of the Mutahiddah Ulama Board (United Religious Clerics board)

The government of Punjab offered the latest demonstration of state-sponsored persecution aimed at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community by banning all publications by the religious group.

This includes books, CDs, periodicals and newspapers and means hundreds of thousands of Ahmadi Muslims across the province face police searches, criminal cases, fines and up to five years in prison.

The ban includes a collection of over 80 books by the founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, His Holiness Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (peace be upon him). These books are religious texts and their unjustified censorship further limits the freedom of religion allowed to Ahmadi Muslims in Pakistan.

The ban comes following a recommendation by the Mutahiddah Ulama Board, a body of religious clerics that supports the persecution of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

Ironically, the books and literature that has been banned includes condemnations of violence, terror and extremism and the promotion of tolerance. Meanwhile, numerous renowned publications by extremist and terrorist groups continue to be widely published, distributed and promoted across Pakistan. Many of these publications which have not been banned promote sectarian hatred and attacks against the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is a peaceful and law-abiding religious group that promotes the motto “Love for All, Hatred for None”. Despite this, Ahmadi Muslims have faced severe persecution in Pakistan. In one attack in the capital of Punjab province, Lahore, in 2010, 86 Ahmadi Muslims were martyred brutally while worshiping at two mosques in the city.

The persecution has been openly supported by the government since 1984 when Ordinance XX was introduced, criminalising the practice of their faith by Ahmadi Muslims. These laws are used to this day to legitimize widespread persecution and discrimination in every aspect of economic, civil, social and political rights. This includes the destruction of properties, mosques and homes, arresting and imprisoning Ahmadi Muslims without trial, the denial of the right to vote, the denial of the right to bury the dead and attacks on Ahmadi Muslim graves.
