HOUSTON -- At the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community mosque in northwest Houston, love is always the running theme. But the Imam says he and his members have also been dealing with hate.

"Once in a while, I do get telephone calls and someone is cussing or saying something foolish," said Imam Mubasher Ahmad.

Ahmad said he was in Dallas when two men opened fire at an event featuring controversial cartoons depicting the Muslim Prophet Mohammed.

The Mohammed Art Exhibit event at the Curtis Culwell Center, outside Dallas, was coming to a close Sunday night when the suspects drove up to a parking lot entrance blocked by a patrol car. Wearing body armor, the suspects got out of their car and started shooting with assault rifles, Harn said.

A security guard was wounded before the suspects were shot to death by a Garland traffic cop.

"I was really surprised," said Ahmad. "I personally didn't know this exhibition was going on by that so-called hate group."

But according to the legal expert for KHOU 11 News, even an event many might deem as hateful falls under the protections of free speech.

"The Supreme Court has said that expression needs protection," said Attorney Gerald Treece.

The Imam said he strongly agrees.

"Because we believe we enjoy the freedom of religion here," said Ahmad. "At the same time, we recognize freedom of speech."
