Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo is a strong ally to the local Muslim community -- something he's been criticized for.

"Some people question why we reach out," he said.

"We want to make sure we have a relationship, so when somebody is acting like they are getting ready to become radicalized they will trust us enough to come forward." He said incidents like the shooting in Garland Sunday night are prime examples of the importance of community engagement.

"They have every right to do it but should use best judgment," said Usama Malik with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association Organization at the University of Texas at Austin.

Malik condemns the attack but said the group who put on the event, The American Freedom Defense Initiative, acted irresponsibly.

"What benefit would this draw out?" he said.

"You really want to combat Islamic extremism yet your adding fuel to the fire." He fears events like this one where artists were invited to show caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed, fan the flames of radicalization in the United States.

Pushing young Muslims towards groups like the Islamic State.

"They'll basically gather more individuals under their fold by saying, 'look, Americans have this entire conference to insulting your religion,'" he said.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association Organization at UT has actively participated in a nation-wide campaign aimed at preventing radicalization called "Stop the CrISIS."

While Austin ISD would not comment on Sunday's event held at a Garland ISD facility they did confirm they have denied rental use of district owned facilities.

Facilities can be rented out to religious groups and for religious purposes.

A spokesperson said they take facility rentals on a case by case basis.

Rental applications can be denied for a number of reasons including if the event is deemed a nuisance to the community.

During the 2013-2014 school year AISD denied seven applications and so far this school year a total of 12 applications have been rejected.

The applications were denied for reasons including scheduling conflicts, insufficient paperwork or film shoots with scripts deemed questionable.
