Recently, the “Khalifa” of ISIS released a message calling all Muslims to fight for ISIS and the Caliphate.
This message is terrifying for Muslims two reasons: (1) It aims to represent Islam as a violent religion which supports the atrocities committed by ISIS, and (2) It aims to misguide other Muslims to partake in the evils committed by ISIS.
However, does ISIS represent Islam? Not at all. As an Ahmadi Muslim, I believe in another caliphate—not one established for political gain, but one established to spiritually guide and unite thousands of Muslims around the world. May 27, 2015 marked the 107th anniversary of the peaceful Caliphate of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.
Our current Khalifa, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, has traveled around the world, delivering keynote addresses in places such as Capitol Hill and the UK Parliament outlining Islamic solutions to peace and condemning ISIS and the atrocities that it commits. Additionally, our mosques and student groups have taken the lead on taking the initiative to prevent the radicalization of Muslim youth by holding “Stop the CrISIS” events in college campuses around the U.S, including George Mason University (GMU). At GMU, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Students Association (AMSA) organized a “Stop the CrISIS” event which reiterated the following words of the Prophet Muhammad, “Love of one’s country of residence is part of faith” and encouraged students to speak out against ISIS. Our message is simple: ISIS does not speak for Islam.
