I applaud the Supreme Court justices for standing up for the rights of minorities who have been discriminated against based on their faith. It is distressing to see that in this day and age women are still judged by their appearance.

Re: “Job applicant wins headscarf case — Ruling for Muslim teen champions religious protection in workplace,” Tuesday news story.
Monday, June 1, 2015, was a historic day for me. As a Muslim woman who wears the hijab (headscarf), I thought the Supreme Court decision in favor of Samantha Elauf was a great victory for Muslim women and other minorities. We live in a diverse nation, and for an employer to deny employment to someone based on their appearance is disheartening, to say the least.

As an Ahmadi Muslim woman, who believes in the Messiah Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, my religion Islam awarded Muslim women the right to get a job while observing hijab more than 1,400 years ago. The Holy Quran says, “Men shall have the share of what they have earned, and women shall have the share of what they have earned.” I hope employers like Abercrombie & Fitch and others will stop judging women and minorities by their looks and start hiring employees based on their skills.
