DG KHAN: Armed gunmen attempted to attack an Ahmadiyya mosque in Tonsa Sharif, Punjab, on Saturday. Attackers shot and critically injured a policeman guarding the mosque and also took away the policeman’s weapon.

The incident took place outside Ahmadiyya mosque, situated on College Road in Tounsa.

Approximately a dozen Ahmadi Muslim worshipers were within the mosque when the attack took place, during the early morning prayers of Ramadan.

In previous years, Ahmadi Muslims of Pakistan have endured lethal attacks during the holy month.

The critically injured policeman, Irshad Hussain, was taken to Tehsil Hospital Tounsa and then rushed to Nishtar Hospital in Multan. “Police have registered a case with clauses of terrorism,” said an official, adding that police have rejected the possibility of any personal feud.

After the incident the SHO of the area was also suspended while the police arrested a number of suspects for interrogation. “A joint investigation team, headed by DSP Tounsa Muhammad Saleem Khan Niazi, has also been set up to probe the incident,” he added. DG Khan DPO Mubashir Mekan said the areas had been cordoned off and the culprits would be arrested soon.
