“If there’s no rain, we pray and seek forgiveness from God, and if it does rain, we still seek forgiveness. We are perpetuating the prayer we did a few weeks ago.”

It seemed as if prayers were answered Tuesday afternoon when droplets of rain began to fall from the skies throughout the inland region.
Just a few weeks before, hundreds of Muslims, Christians, Hindus and Sikhs sat shoulder to shoulder at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s Baitul Hameed Mosque in Chino to hold an interfaith prayer for rain, a spiritual response to a uniquely Californian drought problem.
The prayer was scheduled in the first ten deys of Ramadan, a holy month when Islamic worshippers surrender to God, practice willing abstinence from food and drink, and celebrate his mercy.
“Is this rain a result of our prayers? We don’t know. Only God knows,” said Dr. Ahsan Mahmood Khan, president of Ahmadiyya Muslim community’s Los Angeles East chapter.
The prayer was an act of civil service through beseeching answers from beyond, as Muslim faith teaches them to turn to God in every circumstance.
Yet the promise of monsoonal storms to blow through the region is no miraculous solution to California’s dehydration.
But the rain, Khan said, was faith-inspiring.
Out of advice from the community’s worldwide caliph Mirza Masroor Ahmadcq, who originally inspired Khan to hold the prayer for rain in the first place, the Ahmadiyya Muslim community responded to the abnormal summer weather by bowing their heads in humility.
“If there’s no rain, we pray and seek forgiveness from God, and if it does rain, we still seek forgiveness,” Khan said. “We are perpetuating the prayer we did a few weeks ago.”
Rain or shine, Khan said the community will continue to pray for rainfall, with hopeful forecasts for more interfaith prayers in the future.
