Group seeks to clear up confusion on women in Islam

Tonight, a Muslim women's association at the University of Saskatchewan is inviting people to go behind the veil to uncover misconceptions about Islam.

It's part of the Women's only Symposium at the U of S.

It's a timely discussion. The issue of women wearing the niqab has become a wedge issue in the federal election, after a court struck down a 2011 Conservative ban on wearing the traditional head covering while taking the Canadian citizenship oath.

The group putting on tonight's event, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Women's Association, or AMWA, also blames the media for portraying Islam as repressive and demeaning towards women.

The goal tonight, for the AMWA is to clear up what it sees as confusion and misconceptions.

The talk goes tonight at 6:30 p.m. CST in the Arts Building at the University of Saskatchewan.
