Group seeks to clear up confusion on women in Islam
A Muslim women's association at the University of Saskatchewan invited people to go behind the veil to uncover misconceptions about Islam Thursday night.
The issue of women wearing the niqab has become a wedge issue in the federal election, after a court struck down a 2011 Conservative ban on wearing the traditional head covering while taking the Canadian citizenship oath.
The group putting on tonight's event, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Women's Association, said its goal is to clear up what it sees as confusion and misconceptions about wearing the veil.
"What is the big deal? Right?" Shazia Rehman, one of the women who spoke on Thursday, said. "Because it seems to be causing rather more anxiety than we would have ever presumed from a couple of meters of cloth."
"It's not sort of like harmful in any way. I haven't learnt any techniques in which to hurt anybody wearing this."
Rehman said the fundamental reason Muslim women wear the veil "is because we consider it an act of worship."
She noted how Muslim women who observe the veil do not wear it at home, but consider it important to wear in public.
"We actually think of it as a freeing tool, it's basically part of a way to identify a Muslim woman. It's like a uniform. This is what we wear, this is how we choose to reveal ourselves or this is how much of ourselves we choose to reveal in a public environment."
Reham said the association does not want to politicize the veil or make it an election issue.
"We are grateful for being in Canada and for being provided the opportunity to practice our faith in freedom."
